How to rank in ChatGPT: what actually gets a brand named

· 4 min read · By the Geonos team

The short answer

There is no ranking to buy and no setting to change. ChatGPT builds each answer from sources it can read, so the work is to be present in the ones it cites for your buyer's question. Make your pages crawlable, keep facts consistent, earn mentions on trusted sites, then measure over many runs.

Start with the honest answer

ChatGPT does not have a ranked list you can climb the way you climb Google. It writes an answer, and the answer names some brands and cites some sources. "Ranking in ChatGPT" really means being among the sources and brands it uses for your buyer's question.

Ranking #1 on Google does not guarantee ChatGPT names you

Google says AI Mode needs only a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet. ChatGPT search uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and search partners. A page can rank first on Google and still be missing where ChatGPT looks. So check both, on the same prompts.

What to do

1. Let ChatGPT's crawler reach your pages

Open your robots.txt and make sure it does not block OAI-SearchBot. Blocking it can keep your pages out of ChatGPT search results. Our free audit tests whether AI crawlers can reach your pages under your robots.txt.

2. Write pages that answer the question first

Give the direct answer in the first two sentences, use one page per question, and show a "last checked" date. Pages written this way are easier for an engine to quote.

3. Keep your facts identical everywhere

Names, prices, specs and policies should read the same on your site, your marketplace listings and your profiles. When sources disagree, engines pick one, and it may be the wrong one.

4. Earn mentions where ChatGPT already looks

For many categories the cited sources are reviews, forum threads, videos and publications, not brand sites. Find which sources ChatGPT cites for your prompts, then earn accurate coverage there.

5. If you sell products, treat the feed as part of the job

OpenAI runs a merchant product feed program. ChatGPT's shopping results are organic and unsponsored, so the quality of your product data matters. Check the current requirements with OpenAI before you build.

Can I track my ranking in ChatGPT?

Not as a position, because ChatGPT has no ranked list. What you can track is a rate: how often it names your brand when the same prompt is run many times. You can do this by hand with a spreadsheet, or use a ChatGPT rank tracker or an AI visibility platform that repeats the prompts and keeps the saved answers, dates and sources.

How to measure it

  • Repeat the prompts. ChatGPT answers change between runs, users and places. Run each prompt many times and report a rate, with dated captures you can open.
  • Check referrals. In GA4, visits from ChatGPT arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com.
  • Compare before and after. Keep dated captures of the same prompts around every change.

How Geonos helps

Geonos tracks the prompts that matter to your buyers in ChatGPT and eight other AI answer engines, saves each answer with its date and its sources, and ranks what to fix first. It also tracks Google SEO in the same workspace. See the plans.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to rank in ChatGPT?

Not for answers. There is no placement you can buy in the organic answer. What you control is whether your pages and the sources around you are readable, accurate and consistent.

Does schema markup help me get named in ChatGPT?

Not on its own. In a May 2026 controlled study, JSON-LD schema showed no significant citation lift in ChatGPT (+2.2%) or Google AI Mode (+2.4%) (Ahrefs). Visible, accurate answers on the page matter more.

Why does ChatGPT give different answers each time?

Answers vary by run, user and place. That is why a single check proves nothing. Repeat each prompt and look at the rate.

How long until ChatGPT mentions my brand?

No one can promise a timeline. Fix the sources, then measure the same prompts over weeks and watch the trend.

Is there a ChatGPT rank tracker?

There are tools that track whether and how often ChatGPT names your brand for a set of prompts. They report a rate over many runs, not a fixed position, because ChatGPT does not rank brands in a list.

What is the difference between ranking in Google and being named in ChatGPT?

Google ranks pages in a list. ChatGPT writes an answer and names some brands and cites some sources. A page can rank first on Google and still be missing from the answer, so check both.
